The Captain steering Goldentree with clarity, care and commercial sense.
At Goldentree, people sit at the heart of everything we do. Leading the business is Phil Derbyshire, our Managing Director (or Captain, as some of the team like to call him). We caught up with Phil to talk about leadership, motivation, proud moments – and a few surprising facts along the way.
Phil, in a sentence or two, how would you describe your role at Goldentree?
My role is really about enabling the brilliant team at Goldentree to serve our clients exceptionally well. We pride ourselves on being easy to deal with, quick and commercial in our decision-making and genuinely supportive. I focus on removing barriers, making things simple, and ensuring the team has the tools and freedom they need to deliver outstanding service to both clients and brokers.
What are your key areas of expertise?
I’d say leadership, strategic decision-making and creating an environment where people can do their best work. A big part of my role is balancing commercial thinking with doing the right thing – for our clients, our brokers, and our team.
What led you to join Goldentree back in 2018?
While working in the Corporate Banking team at NatWest, I had the privilege of building close relationships with some of the North West’s most successful businesses. Fred and Peter Done were among them and when they approached me to come and run Goldentree, it honestly felt like one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made – and certainly one of the best.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The variety. No two days are ever the same. Every deal is different, every client has a unique story and I love learning how people build and grow successful businesses. That constant change keeps things exciting.
What’s been your proudest moment at Goldentree so far?
There are two that really stand out. Doubling the size of our loan book is a huge achievement, but I’m equally proud of the fact we’ve raised over £390,000 for Manchester charities since 2018 through our involvement with The Manchester Ball. Giving back is incredibly important to us.
Can you tell us a bit about your career background?
I studied Law at university before joining NatWest in 2006 on their Graduate Scheme, working within Corporate Banking in Manchester. I progressed to Director level before leaving in December 2017 to join Goldentree. Alongside that, I also completed a degree in Financial Services at the University of Manchester.
What motivates you at work?
Doing things properly. Being organised, planning ahead and building a happy, motivated team. Nothing beats receiving fantastic feedback from brokers and clients – it’s a real reminder that we’re making a positive difference.
What’s a fun or surprising fact people might not know about you?
As a child, I played the piano accordion competitively and reached third best in Great Britain. I also once met Tara Palmer-Tompkinson on my honeymoon in Bali – she invited my wife and I back to her villa for dinner!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I’m a big believer in keeping fit – running and regular gym sessions are a big part of my routine. Until recently, I also played five-a-side football, though age has sadly caught up with me! Family time is huge for me too. My daughter swims competitively and my son is passionate about amateur dramatics, so weekends often involve swimming pools and theatre seats.
If Goldentree had an awards ceremony, what would you win?
Probably Cleanest Desk or Cleanest Car. I can be a little OCD – but I see it as a positive!
Do you have a favourite quote or motto?
“Faint heart never won fair maiden.” A reminder that a bit of courage goes a long way.
Finally, what does your ideal weekend look like?
A quiet Friday night, followed by a very early Saturday start – usually a 4:30am alarm to get my daughter to swimming training. Acting class with my son mid-morning, lunch together at home, then dinner out with friends or a cosy takeaway night in. Sunday is all about a proper roast… and ideally a Manchester United win to top it off.
